SE's Journal Training for the 57 mile ride is... getting going. Slow start for the first month (1 down, 3 to go). Last week I went out three times; hitting the target for the first time. :o) This must continue. Yesterday, for the first time, it felt distinctly easier than before. This I take to be good. 30/04 - 06/05 Miles ridden: 34 Injuries: 1 (severe cramp on Tuesday) Hills walked up: 1 (but v. steep) Current mood: Need help from one and all! Some good friends of mine have launched an online business. Basic premise is it's a recipe website, and all the recipes are tried-and-tested, good recipes, written by an experienced chef. Users pay £15 a year to access them. www.reallynicerecipes.com The selling point has been the quality recipes, but what I love most is the fact they have photos at every step. I always get scared when cooking that I've made a mistake, when halfway through it looks a bit weird. :o) Anyway, this is all turning into a bit of a plug, which it wasn't meant to be. Their biggest problem right now is promoting the site, and getting traffic. Starting up, there is next to no cash for Marketing. I've suggested (a) ads on foodie discussion groups (after checking their policy on ads carefully) and (b) partner links with small sites like organic ingredient sellers, farms promoting quality meat, etc. What else? I'm in Marketing, primarily producing text, so I've given them a lot of feedback today (possibly more than was welcome lol) on content, look, etc. But I've not been involved in promoting a site before - can anyone think of other cheap methods for when you're getting started? Comment here. Also, if you have any (nicely put and constructive) feedback on the site, post it here. Ben will be reading.... Current mood: Ordered an Axim!! :oD Anyway, I didn't order a memory card with it as Dell charge through the nose, so I need to get one separately. Probably looking for a 1Gb or 2Gb one. It takes Compact Flash, MMC or SD. I don't really know which is best. My phone has an MMC card and never had any problems with it. Any ideas? It would be used to stick files on relatively temporarily, so lots of writing/deleting, rather than long-term storage. What are the differences between them? I've seen Toshiba Compact Flash one one site, 2Gb is £17.99 for standard, or £26.99 for high-speed. Looking at price comparison sites this seems cheap. Anyone know of better? Current mood: Our company has blocked access to the public website (fftw.com) from internally. My colleague said it's a security threat if we access it, because it's held on internal servers so we're creating an Internet connection from internally round to that server. He's not an IT bod, but said he's come across this in another company and couldn't exlain it more than that. I want to know why that's a security threat.... Current mood: I've been looking to replace my TV unit for ages, because it's the last remaining piece of ultra-cheap Argos "beech effect" furniture in my lounge. :o) Finally found a contender (I want a fairly traditional, dark wood, corner cabinet.. no one else does at the moment it seems), but the two shelves it has would mean the 360 needs to lay horizontally rather than stand vertically. Are there any reports of this causing problems? I know at release there were some complaints about it scratching discs, but it seems like this was when it was moved from vertical to horizontal with a disc inside. I've googled and can't find major issues but just wondered if anyone here has heard of any? Current mood: I'd forgotten that when Tom got his 360, he didn't have a GAME card so I got the points. That plus the points from mine and I can now get £22.50 off something. :o)) Quite liking the look of Quake 4. Reviews suggest frame rate issues but only at a few points in the game where there's a crazy number of enemies about. Big question I have though is multiplayer (offline). Love playing multiplayer FPS with friends, and I can't find anywhere how many players it supports. Need it to be 4....? Any ideas? I could get the game for £17.50 with the money off.... If not, then I haven't yet bought Xbox live membership and could get that v cheap. Or MotoGP is looking pretty good so could pre-order that. Decisions, decisions. Current mood: Just had the phone call from the solicitor - I'm officially a home owner. :oDDD Picking up the keys at lunchtime. *boing* Current mood: Just heard about the Hunger Site. Click on the button marked 'feed the hungry'. It's free to you, and for each click at least a cup of staple food will be donated to someone starving. It works because companies place banner ads on the site, which actually pay for the donations. The more ads they place on a day, the more is donated per click you do. Last year the site generated something like 2,500 tonnes of food, which makes a huge difference for the sake of a click a day. US based, so 30% of the proceeds do go to recipients in the US, but the remaining 70% go to countries including Ethiopia, Somalia etc. It will only register one click per day on each computer, so don't bother sitting there at work all day doing it. :o)) Current mood: Right knowledgable types. Mum's replacing her ten year old TV. She's looking at widescreen LCD HD ready* TVs. In Currys etc, she has noticed that when rugby was on, on some LCD screens the players legs were ghosting when they ran fast. She mainly watches sport, especially football, and doesn't want this to happen. Is this a problem with LCD in general, or just certain makes? She would probably lean towards Toshiba. She's not looking at plasma, so it's LCD or regular widescreens.... Any ideas? I'm still using my cousin's 12 year old 24" Sony which is going strong so not up on TVs. :o) p.s. I am however using paper to make 32 and 37" screen cutouts, to prove to her that 37" in her small lounge would be daft. * Apparently Sky is going HD this year, in time for the world cup, hence wanting HD ready. Current mood:
The spiritual stuff does nothing for me particularly. Overall though a nice start to the series. I've literally only seen a few odd eps of DS9 but I liked this. I've heard season 1 can be a bit slow but is good in places and worth sticking with... I'm waiting for Alex to faint at this post. Will post to UMTSS later when at home. Watching of the series will be slow and sporadic, as I'm getting the discs from lovefilm (rental service), but since I can get them 'free' in effect since it's a monthly charge, I have very little excuse not to watch anymore. :o) Since I can't guarantee the order I get the discs in my queue in, and each DS9 *disc* is listed separately, once one of those has shipped I add the next to the top of my list and so on.
