LCD television question for mum
Right knowledgable types.

Mum's replacing her ten year old TV.

She's looking at widescreen LCD HD ready* TVs. In Currys etc, she has noticed that when rugby was on, on some LCD screens the players legs were ghosting when they ran fast. She mainly watches sport, especially football, and doesn't want this to happen.

Is this a problem with LCD in general, or just certain makes? She would probably lean towards Toshiba.

She's not looking at plasma, so it's LCD or regular widescreens....

Any ideas? I'm still using my cousin's 12 year old 24" Sony which is going strong so not up on TVs. :o)

p.s. I am however using paper to make 32 and 37" screen cutouts, to prove to her that 37" in her small lounge would be daft.

* Apparently Sky is going HD this year, in time for the world cup, hence wanting HD ready.

Had same problem when I had to replace a 20+ yr old Sony 18" set.
I bought a LG 32" HD ready LCD TV from Richer Sounds, at a shade under £900.
Tests so far mean that it is ok for watching rugby - have watched lots of Heiniken cup so far.

It is difficult to gauge the real quality of the output in the store, as they've got sometimes 20 TVs all tied up in a multiscart system, which degrades the quality of the signal that they send out.

If in doubt, bring in a DVD of some rugby - Wales playing would be good, as Red bleed is sometimes a problem.
Ask the store to set up the TV on it's own to play the DVD on a sole feed.
my lounge isn't too big - the TV fits in the 1m wide alcove to the side of the fireplace and looks quite good!

The only thing that the LG doesn't have is a HDMI input - but it has DVI, SCART and component input.

Remember, to get Sky HD, you will need to buy a new SKY box!

Hope this helps???

She knows about the new Sky box and that's ok.

Thanks for the tips for testing them in store. :o)

I'm not that up on them myself, but I remember the AV Forums being incredibly useful when I was looking for a tV a few years back (I also got the Sony 24" :]). Also check the DVD Forums bargain forum (you'll need to sign up), as there'll be details of cheap LCDs + user feedback in the comments.

HTH :)

The ghosting is partly a limitation of LCD technology and partly an input quality thing.

If your Mum's existing Sky/Cable/Freeview box supports RGB output, make sure she uses that. Ditto for her DVD player.

That said, if her DVD player supports component output (and if her TV really is HD ready it will too) then make sure she uses that instead for DVDs.

When she gets Sky HD, she will be able to connect it to her TV using HDMI and this will allow High Def resolutions like 720p, this will deal with any ghosting problems, trust me.

Just don't let her watch analogue (ie broadcast) TV on it. It looks crap.

She doesn't have a DVD player.

She doesn't watch analogue TV - part of the reason she got Sky is she's in an appalling signal area.

So it must have HDMI input? So, (i know nothing), there are HDMI cables like there are Scart cables?

She has a Sky Plus box, got about four months ago. Not sure what that outputs.

Sky+ box will just have Scarts, so that will have to do for now.

A HDMI cable is like this.

Don't be frightened by the price, those are top-end high quality ones. HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It's like a digital Scart cable, carrying both picture and sound digitally. It's an extension of the DVI standard used for connecting PCs to LCD monitors - you can actually get HDMI-DVI adaptors.

Ahhhh ok, thanks.

She's currently looking at the Toshiba 37WL56 (not necessarily from Play, but it lists the spec better than Currys), which does have an HDMI socket (albeit only one).

100 Hz

The problem with ghosting on CRT TVs is often down to the 100 Hz engine. I'm not sure if this exists in LCD TV's but the idea was to double the refresh rate of the picture to make it look smoother. However, many 100 Hz engines were not fast enough so on quick moving images, there was a motion blur. To combat this many TVs have a 'sports' mode which turns off the 100 Hz engine. If LCD TVs do a similar thing, there might be some with 'sports' modes. Snooker suffers from this problem too.
