Had same problem when I had to replace a 20+ yr old Sony 18" set.
I bought a LG 32" HD ready LCD TV from Richer Sounds, at a shade under £900.
Tests so far mean that it is ok for watching rugby - have watched lots of Heiniken cup so far.
It is difficult to gauge the real quality of the output in the store, as they've got sometimes 20 TVs all tied up in a multiscart system, which degrades the quality of the signal that they send out.
If in doubt, bring in a DVD of some rugby - Wales playing would be good, as Red bleed is sometimes a problem.
Ask the store to set up the TV on it's own to play the DVD on a sole feed.
my lounge isn't too big - the TV fits in the 1m wide alcove to the side of the fireplace and looks quite good!
The only thing that the LG doesn't have is a HDMI input - but it has DVI, SCART and component input.
Remember, to get Sky HD, you will need to buy a new SKY box!
Hope this helps???
